Stasbourg / St. Denis - by the late, great Roy Hargrove. It's a fun tune to improvise on, which we demonstrate with this 11-minute version at Northern Natural Cider House in Chief Michigan, from the summer of 2025.
I remember first playing this on a street-walking gig in Petoskey. Jarad or Scott suggested it while we were standing by our cars, putting our horns together. Somebody played it on a phone, and the next thing you know we're walking to Beards, playing Strasbourg.
Since then, it's become a staple in our set lists, and Andrew has even added his own interpretive vocal part.
Enjoy and let us know what you think!
Roy Anthony Hargrove, born on Oct. 16, 1969, in Waco, Texas, to Roy Allan and Jacklyn Hargrove, was an incisive trumpeter who embodied the brightest promise of his jazz generation, both as a young steward of the bebop tradition and a savvy bridge to hip-hop and R&B. Strasbourg / St. Denis was first released on Earfood in 2008.
